  Feeding of Trigla cuculus on the coast of Lattakia, Syria

  Abstract
  The study included 124 Trigla cuculus fish caught from Syrian marine waters from two sites, Burj Islam and Al Raml Al Janoubi, during the period between 16/6/2017 and 22/5/2018 using the bottom shelf. The research used the mathematical treatments used globally to study the food of fish, and the results showed that the fish species Trigla cuculus is a predatory fish, and it feeds on deciduous crustaceans, fish, mollusks, and gastropods. Through research, the cancer Ethusa mascarone was identified in the stomach of a fish, and it was recorded for the first time in Syria.

  Allelopathic Potential of Selected Weeds Extract on Germination and Growth of Borreria stachydea (DC.)

  Abstract
  The uses of paraquat chemicals as weedicide in agriculture soil have causes the loss of natural habitats, food, and pollution of environment, risk of human health, animals and contamination of water body. This research aimed to study the allelopathic effect of aqueous extract of Sesbania sesban (L.), Rhynchosia minima L, Indigofera hirsuta L, Tephrosia vogelli F and Crotalaria retusa L on seed germination and growth of Borreria stachydea (DC.) using in-vitro and in vivo methods at different concentrations 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. From, the results obtained, the extracts of I. hirsuta L and S. sesban (L.) had higher inhibitory effect at 20% concentration, than that of T. vogelli F, Crotalaria retusa L. and R. minema L on growth parameters of B. stachydea (DC.) when compared with control. In laboratory, most toxic plant extract against B. stachydea (DC.) was S. sesban (L.). Therefore mixed extract of these plant could be used in management of weed in order to reduce the use of synthetics herbicides in agricultural land for the control of weeds. Farmers should allow these five species with allelopathic properties to growth closed to cultivated crops.

  Distribution, Population Status and Ecology of the Endangered Barbary Macaque Macaca sylvanus in North Africa

  Abstract
  The Barbary macaque Macaca sylvanus currently survives in small fragmented isolates in Morocco and Algeria. Between 65 and 75 % of the world’s population occurred in the central zone of the Moroccan Middle Atlas. In Morocco, the species survives today in the Rif, the Middle Atlas and the High Atlas mountains. In Algeria it occurs in three areas: Chiffa, Grande Kabylie and Petite Kabylie. Free-ranging Barbary macaques are currently found in Gibraltar. In Europe, there are three major free ranging captive colonies of Barbary macaques in France and Germany. In the early 1980s, the total population size was estimated to be 14 000–23 000. Several recent studies indicated a dramatic decline of the Barbary macaque populations and concluded this decline on habitat destruction, impact of livestock grazing, the population fragmentation, the illegal capture of infant macaques, and the effects of human activities on the Barbary macaques’ behaviour. The species is listed in CITES Appendix I and is classified as an endangered species on the IUCN’s Red List. Barbary macaques are an essential component of North Africa biodiversity, contributing to forest regeneration and ecosystem health. This paper aims to determine the current distribution, status and ecology of the Barbary macaque in Morocco and Algeria, to identify the potential threats to the species, and to make recommendations for the protection of the species in North Africa.

  Abstract
  A study on butterfly was carried out at Holkar Science College Campus, Indore District, Madhya Pradesh, India, during 2020 to 2021. A total of 51 butterfly species were recorded. Family Nymphalidae (21) dominates in the study area, followed by Pieridae (11), Lycaenidae (11), Papilionidae (05) with minimum members of Hesperiidae (03). Total larval food plants recorded from the campus are 41 belonging to different families. Hygrophylla aericulata were found most importance larval food plants as they supports the five pansies found here. The ratio of food plants and butterflies is near about 1:1. Plants of the Asteraceae family were more used by butterflies as nectar food plants. These findings are important with respect to butterfly diversity and abundance in planning conservation strategies in the area. The very common butterflies are Common jezebel, Common gull, Common emigrant, Mottled emigrant, Common grass yellow, Red Pierrot, Common castor, Chocolate pansy, Pale grass blue, Small grass jewel, Lemon pansy, Great egg fly, Danaid egg fly, Plain tiger and among very rare includes Lesser gul, Baronet, Grey pansy, Spot swordtail, Royal peacock, Commander, and Common wanderer. The study area is rich in butterfly diversity and further research could be conducted to obtained more details and documentation on butterfly diversity and abundance for the conservation and butterfly park.
