Abstract :
Blood transfusion is a life-saving intervention that has an essential role in patient management within health care systems. Unfortunately, many cases of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections in adult populations were found to be associated with blood transfusions, since HBV is infective through blood and body-fluid, including vertical transmission. Today, hepatitis B virus is among the greatest threats to blood safety for the recipient. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of HBV infections among blood donors over a period of 4 years at Amaryawa Model Primary Health Care (AMPHC), Jigawa State, Nigeria. The recorded blood donors? history and laboratory tests were reviewed by data collectors analyzed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20 software. A p-value of less than 0.005 was considered statistically significant. A total of 10,416 consecutive blood donors were screened between January 2018 and December 2021. The seroprevalence of HBV was 15% and 11% for uneducated family and commercial donors respectively. The prevalence of HBV was significantly associated with male rural dwellers {ECD: 43(6%), UeCD: 272(11%), EFD: 47(7.5%), UeFD: 987(15%)}, blood donors within 20-60 years of age. The current study shows the prevalence of hepatitis B virus was high among study participants. A substantial percentage of the blood donors harbor HBV infections. Therefore, it is recommended to increase awareness of people (particularly on unmarried, male and rural dwellers) on modes of transmission and prevention of infection, which could help in reducing the burden of hepatitis B virus.
