Abstract :
Reversible logic gates have become one of the most promising logic building blocks in designing combinational circuits. Reversibility plays a fundamental role when a computation with minimal energy dissipation is considered. The basic advantage of these reversible logic gates over the conventional logic gate is low power consumption and reduced circuit complexity. These are very much suitable for the fields namely, low power CMOS, quantum computing, nanotechnology, DNA computing, digital signal processing (DSP), quantum dot cellular automata, communication, computer graphics and optical computing. The main purpose of designing reversible logic gates is to decrease quantum cost, depth of the circuits and the number of garbage outputs. Future digital technology will use reversible logic gates in order to reduce the power consumption and propagation delay due to effectiveness and negligible loss of information in the circuit. In this article a comparative study of conventional and reversible logic gates for various applications is highlighted. Some sample examples from the literature have witnessed the significant saving in power. Reversible gates in designing of more complex system serve as primitive component and which can execute more complicated operations leading to the development of quantum computers.
