Abstract :
Sawmills are located in different locations within cities especially in developing countries with little or no knowledge about what the implications of their operational activities would be to both the operators and the adjoining environment. The study was conducted in Ilorin; Kwara state Nigeria to examine the environmental impact of the location of two leading sawmills on the adjoining residents in the city. Data for this study were collected from primary and secondary sources. The primary data were sourced from physical observations, oral interview and questionnaire administration. Ten (10) percent of the houses that fall within 1 kilometer radius of the two sawmills were selected using systemic random sampling as such a total of 131 questionnaires were administered on residents. Data collected were analyzed with the aid of descriptive statistical analysis such as frequency and percentage. The study revealed that majority of sampled residents are not pleased with the location of the sawmills in their neighborhood as they considered the sawmills have negative impact on them such as frequent headache, hearing problem and respiratory ailment among others due to Machine noise, Dust and particles, and Smoke. The study concluded with appropriate recommendation to address the environmental challenges pose by the location of the sawmill
