Abstract :
Present work analyzes the result of seasonal variation on various physical and chemical properties in borehole water in four schools in Barasat, District North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Samples of water were collected first in the wet month (September 2016) and later in dry month (December 2016). Samples were analyzed for seven parameters namely pH, temperature, turbidity, total hardness, iron, manganese and arsenic following approved standard guideline of APHA (American Public Health Association Color Scale, 1995). The results were analysed and comparisons were done as per standard procedures of drinking water of WHO (World Health Organization) and BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). Most of the samples contain iron and manganese in an amount much higher than the permissible limit especially in dry season. The pH of the water samples recorded in two different seasons varied from 6.81 to 7.19. Arsenic concentrations for most of the school boreholes were within BIS and WHO recommended limits. High turbidity was recorded in two school samples which were above the recommended limit and has considerable health risk. Overall, the majority of the schools have high values of iron and manganese well above the acceptable limit. Thus, proper water treatment measures are required to be taken or alternative sources of drinking water may be arranged.
