Abstract :
Paragraph writing is one of the most critical skills that indicate that a language learner is learning a language. This study determined the peer review method`s (PRM) efficacy on the paragraph writing skills of Grade 6 students. A quantitative research design was utilized with descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage), paired T-test, and Wilcoxon sign-ranked test as the data analysis. The results revealed that before implementing the PRM, the learners had low (fairly satisfactory) to very low (did not meet expectation) writing skills, especially grammar, structure, and punctuation. Also, they have remarkably improved their writing skills in terms of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling after using the peer-review method; however, only a slight improvement in the structure and grammar aspects. Nevertheless, the learners` writing skills significantly increased by percentage points [10.1, 10.5, 10.1, 5.0, and 2.9] for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, structure, and grammar, respectively, after using the PRM. With these results, the PRM improves the paragraph writing skills of grade 6 pupils, specifically on spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Since there is only a minimal increase in the language structure and grammar, these writing aspects need improvement among feedback givers to provide suggestions that improve the parts and parcels and the totality of the paragraphs. Intensified training, orientations, and paragraph writing skills tests among the peer reviewers are necessary before the method is adopted for instruction. Appropriate interventions can be a priority after assessing the writing skills of the feedback givers. The training with orientations of the writing process and assessment of the paragraph writing skills will ensure that sentence structure and grammar, including capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, will be enhanced because these are the foundation of excellent and quality communication.
