Abstract :
Nigeria has a vast network of water transportation that allows easier and cheaper transportation to the urban and rural areas. However, frequent accidents within coastal and inland waterways have caused significant loss of human lives and properties. This paper statistically analyzed the boat accidents data from 2010 to 2021. The research made use of secondary data that was collected from the Nigeria watch database which sources information from Nigerian press corporations. The statistical tools adopted for data analysis include line charts, bar charts. The study observed a total of 2346 lives, were lost to 266 causalities of boat accidents between 2010 to October 2021. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in 2021. The study established that the major cause of boat accidents in Nigeria is human-related factors (67.21%) followed by natural factors (22.13%). The study indicates that passenger boats (52.46%) and Cargo boats (14.21%) are the highest boat types responsible for accidents in Nigeria waterways. Finally, some recommendations are proposed for the improvement of water transport safety in Nigeria.
