Abstract :
Transition to a low-carbon world requires a transformation in the way iron and steel is manufactured. Hydrogen is quickly becoming a new player around the world for low-carbon/zero carbon emission fuel hence fulfilling the Paris Agreement. To achieve this, electrolysis of water with no carbon emissions – at a competitive price point is available. Other processes are also described such as Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology (HYBRIT), fluidized bed-hydrogen based DRI and plasma direct steel productions which are considered to be futuristic hydrogen based steel making, hence overcoming the conventional steelmaking. National Hydrogen Strategy (of Europe) focuses on green hydrogen instead of grey hydrogen is backed by international government has incorporated to introduce hydrogen into industrial processes to wide scale decarbonization and worldwide emissions reduction. India has the potential to bring down the cost of green hydrogen by using low-cost renewable generating plants and cost-curtailment experience gained through solar and wind reverse auctions. As hydrogen continues to become readily available, so will the opportunities to make industries green.
