Abstract :
The coronavirus pandemic affected the day-to-day normal activities of everyone. The majority of people were advised to work from home. Teachers and students could not return to the typical classroom environment. Online learning offers a great opportunity for teaching and learning. But it has posed changes and challenges in the lives of everyone. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find out the challenges faced by teachers during online classes and to assess their readiness for blended learning. In particular, the study was performed to identify the experiences of teachers during online learning. The study employed the use of phenomenological research to determine the real experiences of Social Studies teachers during online learning. This study also utilized a purposive and convenient sampling procedure in selecting its participants. The interview was used to gather the data. This study utilized narrative analysis. The researcher constructed codes based on recurring language and statements provided by participants to aid in data processing and increase understanding. Findings revealed that the major themes that emerged in the challenges faced by teachers were: familiarity with online applications; preparation of learning materials, and channelling of lessons. Whereas, the themes that arose in terms of coping strategies were: the adjustment phase; balancing work and personal life, and peer assistance. Lastly, the themes that came up in terms of preparations for blended learning were: preparation for blended learning, learnings from online teaching; and school assistance and recommendations. Recommendations, as gleaned from the study, were: professional development for teachers and support from the school management.
