Abstract :
The study examined the effect of Hauenstein practical skill acquisition model on student’s performance in Domestic Installation at technical colleges in Bauchi state, Nigeria. To achieve this, four specific objectives, four research questions and four null hypotheses were tested to guide the study. Quasi-experimental design was employed as the design of the study; specifically pre-test post-test non equivalent treatment group design was used. The population of the study comprised 318 NTC II technical colleges’ students offering Domestic Installation in the state. A multi stage cluster sampling technique was used in selecting two technical colleges out of the eight technical colleges offering Domestic Installation to come up with a sampling frame of 79 students from the two technical colleges selected as intact classes for experimental and control groups. The research instrument captioned Domestic Installation Performance Test (DIPT) adopted from National Business and Technical Examination Board past questions related to the three topics taught in the study was validated by three experts. The experimental group was drilled using Hauenstein practical skill acquisition model while, the control group was taught using conventional (discussion-demonstration) approach for a period of three weeks concurrently. The data collected for the study were analyzed using mean and standard deviation present in SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) software while, the null hypotheses were tested using independent and paired samples t-test. The pre-test mean performance scores of both experimental and control groups showed that both groups have almost equal performance. The post-test mean performance score of experimental group stood at (117.29) which was significantly higher than the post-test mean performance score of control group (105.54) with mean difference of (11.75), this revealed that, the students taught using Hauenstein practical skill acquisition model performed better than the students taught using conventional (discussion-demonstration) approach. Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that Hauenstein practical teaching model is an effective method of teaching Domestic Installation. The study recommended among others that; Domestic Installation teachers in Technical Colleges should use Hauenstein practical skill acquisition model in teaching Domestic Installation to enhance student’s mastery in practical skills acquisition and academic performance.
