Abstract :
This study examined the mediating impact of parental involvement between intrinsic motivation and academic performance among upper basic II students in Delta State. Two research questions and hypotheses guided this study. There was a review of empirical studies. The study adopted ex post facto and correlational design. The population of the study was 51, 500, comprised of all students in Public Upper Basic II Education in Delta State. A sampled size of 381 students were used in this study. Two scales where used to collect data for this study, titled: Intrinsic Motivation Scale (IMS) and Parental Involvement Scale (PIS). The school record of academic performance was used to obtain students results Sheet. The two scales had Cronbach Alpha reliability co-efficient of .79 for Intrinsic Motivation scale, .67 for Parental Involvement Scale. Correlation and Regression statistics were employed to analyze the data. The result revealed that there was a significant statistical relationship between intrinsic motivation and academic performance among upper basic II students in Delta State. Parental involvement significantly mediated the relationship between intrinsic motivation and academic performance among Upper basic II students in Delta State. The study recommends that there should be a campaign for the existing Parents Teacher Association (PTA) to encourage parental involvement in their children`s education, emphasizing the importance of their role in supporting and nurturing intrinsic motivation.
